Jessie J has revealed she’s facing a battle with breast cancer.
The renowned singer shared the news on Instagram on Tuesday, June 3, disclosing that she has been diagnosed with an “early” stage of the disease and plans to undergo surgery after her upcoming performance at Summertime Ball on June 15.
“I was diagnosed with early breast cancer. I’m highlighting the word early,” the “Price Tag” singer said in a heartfelt video message to her fans. “Cancer sucks in any form, but I’m holding on to the word early.”
She explained that she’s been undergoing multiple tests throughout this time and felt the need to open up and share her journey.
Jessie said she hasn’t had much time to talk about or even process the diagnosis because she’s been “working so hard.”
However, she acknowledged the power of sharing and how it has helped her in the past, thanks to the support and personal stories from others. “It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much, similar and worse. That’s the bit that kills me.”
She also admitted that it didn’t feel right to release new music without being transparent about her condition.
“To get diagnosed with this as I’m putting out a song called ‘No Secret’ right before” and “a song called ‘Living My Best Life’” felt off to her. She clarified that the songs had all been “pre-planned before I found out about this,” adding, “I mean, you can’t make it up.”
Despite the heavy news, Jessie kept her signature humor intact, pointing out the strange silver lining in the situation — reconstructive surgery.
“It wasn’t something I planned, but yeah. I’m getting to keep my nipples. That’s good. It’s a weird topic and a weird situation,” she joked. “It’s a very dramatic way to get a b— job. I am going to disappear for a bit after Summertime Ball (June 15) to have my surgery, and I will come back with massive t— and more music.”
