Forget complex marketing strategies and carefully curated viral videos. If you want to become an overnight global sensation, the formula is apparently simple: turn 40, play in the Portuguese second division, qualify for the World Cup, and single-handedly lock down the reigning champions of Europe.

That is exactly the blueprint laid out by Cape Verde’s veteran goalkeeper, Vozinha. Before stepping onto the pitch to face soccer powerhouse Spain, the veteran keeper maintained a modest Instagram presence of around 46,000 followers—mostly consisting of family, friends, and neighbors back home on the island.

Then, the match happened. After putting on an absolute masterclass with seven logic-defying saves to stonewall the Spanish attack, his phone practically melted. Within three hours of the final whistle, his follower count skyrocketed to 2.4 million. As of today, it has cleared a staggering 5.7 million.

Breaking the Internet (and Battery Life)

To put those numbers into perspective, Vozinha now has nearly five times the total population of Cape Verde following his page.

The sudden explosion of internet fame led to a hilarious post-match scene in the locker room, with the veteran keeper reportedly turning to his younger teammates in pure confusion.

“Guys, how do you turn off this Instagram? It’s completely draining my battery!” Vozinha joked.

Spain’s world-class attackers couldn’t find a way past him on the pitch, but the internet certainly found him off it. Overnight, a second-division journeyman became the biggest feel-good story of the tournament.
