‘Friends’ Cast Mourns Heartbreaking Death: ‘A True Icon’
Members of the Friends cast are coming together to mourn the heartbreaking loss of legendary television director James Burrows, with stars like Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, and David Schwimmer sharing emotional tributes on social media.
The director’s family confirmed his passing at the age of 85 in an official statement released on Friday, July 19.
“We celebrate the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of James ‘Jimmy’ Burrows, who passed away peacefully today surrounded by his loving family,” they shared. “For more than five decades, Burrows was one of the most influential and beloved directors in television history. As a legendary director, mentor, and creative force, he helped shape generations of comedy and brought immeasurable joy to audiences around the world.”
Burrows leaves behind an unparalleled legacy in Hollywood, having served as a director on some of the most iconic sitcoms in television history, including The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Will & Grace, Taxi, Frasier, and 3rd Rock from the Sun, in addition to co-creating and directing Cheers.
Following the announcement of his death, several of the actors who worked alongside him during his time on Friends took to Instagram to honor his memory.
Matt LeBlanc, who portrayed Joey Tribbiani on the beloved NBC series, shared a poignant photo of himself alongside Burrows. “Jimmy, words cannot describe the impact and influence you had on us and everyone who was lucky enough to have known you,” LeBlanc wrote. “You, sir, are a true icon on so many levels. Well wishes in your next act. You will be missed. God bless.”
Lisa Kudrow, known for her role as Phoebe Buffay, also paused to honor the late director, posting a simple and heartfelt snapshot of the two of them together on her Instagram Stories.
Meanwhile, David Schwimmer, who played Ross Geller, uploaded a pair of photos to his main Instagram grid alongside a deeply moving, lengthy reflection on what Burrows meant to the cast.
“Jimmy Burrows brought out the best in every actor he ever worked with, and elevated every show he directed, making it funnier and more moving than anyone expected,” Schwimmer shared.
In his tribute, Schwimmer spoke of the director’s deeply personal impact, describing Burrows as a genuine “father figure” whose “warmth, humility, and generosity made us feel safe.”
The actor went on to characterize his guidance as “Paternal in the best sense of the word: Loving, wise, encouraging, challenging, instructive, patient, inspiring, playful — and on my best days, I’d like to think, even proud.” Concluding his public message, Schwimmer expressed his lasting appreciation for the Hollywood icon, writing, “Jimmy, I miss you already, and I’m forever grateful to you. Thank you for being such a wonderful director, mentor, and friend. Sending love and strength to Deb and the entire family.”

Friends remains one of the most culturally significant television shows of all time, broadcasting for 10 highly successful seasons from 1994 to 2004.
Alongside Kudrow, Schwimmer, and LeBlanc, the central ensemble featured Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green, Courteney Cox as Monica Geller, and the late Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing.
